The tax credit known as the Sick and Family Leave Tax Credit is available to self-employed and 1099 workers who meet certain criteria. Under the FFCRA (Families First Coronavirus Response Act), eligible individuals who are self-employed or work as independent contractors could be eligible to receive a refundable tax credit. This credit is based on a percentage of the qualified sick and family leave equivalent amounts, subject to specific conditions, if the inability to work or telework was due to COVID-19-related reasons.
The amount of qualified sick leave equivalent is determined by the lesser of either $511 per day or 100% of the average daily self-employment income for the days when an individual couldn't work or telework due to various COVID-19-related circumstances, such as being under a quarantine or isolation order, experiencing COVID-19 symptoms and seeking a medical diagnosis, or caring for someone who was under quarantine or had COVID-19 symptoms.
For the qualified family leave equivalent, the amount is the lesser of either $200 per day or 67% of the average daily self-employment income for the days when an individual couldn't work or telework because they needed to care for a child whose school or place of care was closed due to COVID-19.
To claim this tax credit, eligible self-employed individuals or independent contractors would need to report the qualified sick and family leave equivalent amounts on their appropriate tax return for the year in which the leave was taken (2019, 2020, or 2021, depending on the timing of the leave).

Here are some of the key considerations that influence the calculation of your tax credit refund amount:
1. Your net income from the schedule C on your tax returns for 2019, 2020, and 2021.
2. The number of days you were absent from work due to illness or quarantine related to Covid-19.
3. The duration of time you spent caring for a Covid-19 affected family member.
4. The length of closures for schools or daycare centers that necessitated your care for a minor child during those periods.
